The World's First Pubicly-Audited No Log VPN

VyprVPN is one of the services I recommended as one of the best VPN services for China. After you read this article, you’re going to know why.

Though the service is run by a small team, they have a mission. Their goal is to provide better privacy, security, and internet freedom.

When GoldenFrog launched VyprVPN, they believed that logging a minimal amount of service data would improve customer service. Many VPN services take commercial advantage of providing a connection through their servers. They record user data and sell it to third-parties. In fact, there are certain free VPNs that do this exclusively to make money.

VyprVPN stayed committed to minimizing data logs to improve performance, speed, and reliability. After using their service for the last few months, I have to say that it shows. By maintaining transparency, VyprVPN has set itself apart from the rest of the available services.

Why Did They Switch to No Log?

The team at VyprVPN has always been particularly sensitive when it comes to feedback from their customers. They were already aware that logging activity from a VPN Provider, even a small amount, erodes trust. But the tipping point was when they saw this tweet in response to a discussion on a Wirecutter article.

Though Vypr had only included minimal logging, this got their services excluded from the review. As time goes on, people’s expectations have changed. People are demanding more privacy measures from the companies that they do business with. Companies that are often involved in the transmission of sensitive business data are particularly cautious.

Isn't This Just Self-Promotion?

There have been no few numbers of VPN provider who have promised security and anonymity to their users. But often, this doesn't prevent them from handing user data over to authorities. This could cause attitudes toward the VPN industry as a whole to sour. So there needs to be some kind of external quality assurance to audit these providers.

This is why VyprVPN partnered with the Center of Democracy & Technology to develop the "Signals of Trustworthy VPNs" report." Encouraging more VPN companies to could serve to restore trust in the industry.

China Doubling Down on VPN Blocking

Since June of 2018, the Chinese government has started to intensify their internet censorship efforts. VyprVPN in China has done an excellent job of keeping their services available to users in spite of these changes.

On the evening of October 28th, many VyprVPN connections started being blocked in China. The engineers at VyprVPN rolled out some workarounds and were able to restore service within minutes.

What was significant about this attack was the way that the Chinese firewall appeared to combat their service in real time as you can see in the image below.

Their team of network engineers did an excellent job of managing the crisis. What’s notable is that VyprVPN operates 100% without any third parties. They own their own servers and networks. This is another aspect of the quality that this service provides as I’ve explained above.

Because they have control of their entire business, they can respond to blocks and other situations almost immediately. They don't have to wait for other service providers to get on the clock to do something.

Services to Access Using VyprVPN

Twitch, the popular video game streaming service was blocked in China back in September of 2018. Soon after the app was no longer available in the Chinese Apple App Store.

Another popular gaming-related service was also blocked later in 2018 when Discord got put behind the firewall. China has their own game-related streaming platforms in Douyu and Huya.

Twitch never got much attention in China until there were matches from Asian Games plated in Jakarta only available for viewing on the platform. Because China couldn’t regulate the content on the popular site, it was blocked.

VyperVPN remains an excellent service for accessing game related streaming sites, blocked pages on Steam, playing Western MMOs, and watching videos on YouTube.
